Frequently Asked Questions

What are NFTs and can I use one to get out of a parking ticket?

Parking ticke...? No. Well, I mean, maybe? NFTs aren't just Nougat Filled Truffles, they're also these fun little digital things called Non-Fungible Tokens that people who have nothing else to do with their hoards of cash trade for millions of dollars. Each NFT is unique and is not interchangeable with any other NFT on a blockchain. NFT creators will, at times, decide to make them "rare" or "limited edition" so that the price goes up, leaving you to decide which is more important: your mortgage payments, or that picture of a cute monkey wearing a banana hat. For real though, things like artwork make for great NFTs because they have value and are unique. Multiple NFTs can exist of a specific piece of artwork, but they would each be considered unique items and may have different properties, such as edition numbers. But wait, there's more: if there are NON-fungible tokens, then there must also be Fungible Tokens, right? Right. You see, cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin or Dogecoin, are considered to be FTs, or Fungible Tokens. An individual Bitcoin, for example, is interchangeable with any other Bitcoin - much like a dollar bill.

Is a blockchain some kind of Jiu Jitsu thing?

Nah dog, a blockchain is just a database or ledger that is spread out across many different machines across a network of computers. It's kept up to date by a bunch of old Yentas who run around telling the whole network the latest news. They mean well. Also, because humans will be humans, there are many different blockchain networks that run on all kinds of different software and protocols. Blockchains are what allow for digital transactions, such as sending or receiving NFTs or cryptocurrency, to be saved forever in indisputable records.

I already have a wallet. Why do you keep telling me I need another one?

You can think of a wallet as the instrument that holds your cryptocurrency, just like a real wallet would hold your money if you hadn't spent it all on Avocado Toast. However, a wallet is really just a way of identifying you and allowing you to sign/approve transactions on a blockchain. The important component behind your wallet is a secret key (private key) and your wallet address. You might want to keep them in a safe place because there is no roommate to give you a new copy if you lose these keys. Your wallet address is a string of characters that you give to others so that they can send you tokens (fungible or non-fungible) - you can think of it as your bank account number. This secret key is used to create a verifiable "stamp" to put your approval on a transaction to say things like "Yes, I would, in fact, like to send 1 Bitcoin to that account" or "Yes, I would, in fact, like to send this NFT of a kitten to my friend Nate because, while the pandemic has been hard on everyone, it's been especially hard on him and his 35 cats." Since all of the transactions are publicly on the blockchain (ledger), anyone can see the transactions that your account has signed. Now everyone knows about your cat problem, Nate.

I have a hole in my pocket, how do I buy an NFT?

You can use your hard-earned cash to buy NFTs straight from our NFT gallery! We use the Flow USD (FUSD) cryptocurrency together with the Blocto wallet service. If you don't have a Blocto wallet yet, you'll have the opportunity to sign up. When you sign up, you'll go through a process that will enable you to send/receive Flow USD and set you up with a place to store the NFTs that you'll purchase. We use a provider called MoonPay to top up/load your FUSD account with money from your credit or debit card, which you can do by clicking "Top Up" at the top of the website. All we ask is that when your NFT investments finally pay off and you're rakin' in that cold, hard digital cash that you remember who hooked you up with your first NFTs. We did.

Gas fees? WTF?

Remember those blockchain Yentas we were telling you about earlier? It turns out they expect rewards for spreading the good word all over the network. You see, someone has to verify that all of the transactions really happened and that you really did want to transfer all of your Bitcoin to Nate for his cat health insurance fees. People called miners do just that, and they prioritize which transactions they verify first based on the gas fee that other people are willing to pay. The higher the gas fee, the sooner your transaction will be verified and sealed.

What is this magical sounding MoonPay stuff?

When you were a kid, do you remember that awesome magic trick your grandfather used to do where he would put a piece of paper into a little device and a dollar bill came out of it? Well, this is the opposite of that. MoonPay is a magical internet platform that let's you put in your credit card details and buy magical cryptocurrency that you can later use to buy even more magical NFTs!

How do I top up with MoonPay?

If by top up you mean buy cryptocurrency, you can do that by clicking the "Top Up" button at the top of any page on our site. This will bring you to the MoonPay website where you will be asked to create an account and fill in a bunch of info to get yourself verified so that you can buy cryptocurrency. The verification process is just necessary so that MoonPay knows you're not secretly some kind of El Chapo trying to hide your drug money in NFTs. You're not, right?

Topping up with MoonPay failed, what do I do?

Have you tried turning it off and on again? If that didn't work, try blowing on the cartridge. This is Web 3.0, so there are still a few kinks in the system that will be worked out over time. If you're still having problems, here are some steps that might actually be useful: 1) Try the purchase again. 2) Try contacting MoonPay, as they may be able to help. 3) If nothing else works, email us at support@ae.studio and we'll do what we can!

This website makes me absolutely furious! Are you guys freakin' serious?!

Sort of, yeah. While giving NFTs themselves to children in Africa probably won't help them much, what we are trying to do is to raise awareness for effective altruism while poking a little fun at campaigns that usually end up keeping the majorty of their funds raised. When you buy an NFT here you will own it - and we won’t actually be giving an NFT to a starving child - but what we will do is donate to the Against Malaria fund (an effective charity) to actually help those who need it. Check out Giving Back or visit Giving What We Can for more information.
